Why They Matter Before the Long Drive Home

Preventive Maintenance Tips in Jacksonville, FL | Ortega Car Care

For many seasonal residents and snowbirds, spring and early summer mean one thing — it’s time to pack up and head north. Whether you’re driving a few states away or crossing the country, preparing your vehicle for a long road trip is just as important as planning your route.

At Ortega Car Care, we see it every year: small, overlooked issues turning into major problems halfway through a long drive. A pre-trip inspection can help prevent breakdowns, delays, and costly repairs on the road.

What Is a Pre-Trip Inspection?

A pre-trip inspection is a comprehensive check of your vehicle’s most critical systems to ensure everything is operating safely and reliably before a long journey.

Unlike a quick oil change, this inspection focuses on components that are most likely to fail during extended highway driving or in changing climates.

Why Pre-Trip Inspections Are Especially Important for Snowbirds

Seasonal drivers often face unique challenges, including:

  • Vehicles that sit for extended periods

  • Long-distance highway driving

  • Sudden climate changes

  • Heavy loads from luggage and passengers

Florida heat can also accelerate wear on hoses, belts, batteries, and cooling systems. Catching issues before you leave Jacksonville is far easier than dealing with them in an unfamiliar town.

Our technicians perform a digital vehicle inspection, giving you clear photos and notes so you can make informed decisions. A typical pre-trip inspection includes:

πŸ”§ Tires & Suspension

  • Tire tread depth and condition

  • Proper tire inflation

  • Suspension and steering components

πŸ”‹ Battery & Electrical System

  • Battery health and charging system

  • Starter and alternator performance

πŸ›‘ Brakes

  • Brake pad and rotor condition

  • Brake fluid level and quality

🌑️ Cooling System

  • Radiator and coolant condition

  • Hoses and belts

  • Water pump and thermostat check

πŸ›’οΈ Fluids

  • Engine oil

  • Transmission fluid

  • Brake fluid

  • Power steering and coolant

πŸ’‘ Lights & Safety Features

  • Headlights, brake lights, and turn signals

  • Wiper blades and windshield washer system

Peace of Mind Before You Hit the Road

A pre-trip inspection isn’t just about avoiding breakdowns — it’s about confidence. Knowing your vehicle has been thoroughly inspected by ASE-certified technicians allows you to enjoy the drive instead of worrying about what might go wrong.

If repairs are recommended, you’ll have the opportunity to address them before your trip, often saving time and money compared to emergency repairs on the road.

It ’s Getting Hot… Let’s Talk About Your Car’s A/C If you’ve turned on your A/C lately and thought, “This doesn’t feel as cold as it should,” you’re not alone. This time of year in Jacksonville, we start seeing a big increase in A/C concerns, and one of the most common things we hear is: “I think I just need my Freon topped off.” Here’s the thing… most modern cars don’t even use “Freon” anymore. What Happened to Freon? “Freon” became a catch-all term over the years, kind of like saying “Kleenex” for tissues. Older vehicles used a refrigerant called R-12 (that’s what many people still call Freon), but that was phased out years ago. Most vehicles on the road today use: R-134a (common in vehicles from early 2000s through mid-2010s) R-1234yf (what most newer vehicles use today) These newer refrigerants are more environmentally friendly and designed for modern A/C systems, but they also mean your system works a little differently than you might expect. Why “Topping Off” Isn’t Always the Answer If your A/C isn’t blowing cold, it’s usually not because it just “ran out.” Your A/C system is sealed, so refrigerant doesn’t get used up like fuel. If it’s low, there’s typically a leak somewhere in the system. Simply adding refrigerant without finding the cause is like putting air in a tire with a nail in it. It might help for a short time, but the problem is still there. Common Reasons Your A/C Isn’t Keeping Up Modern A/C systems are more efficient, but they’re also more complex. Some of the most common issues we see include: Small refrigerant leaks Weak compressors Clogged or dirty cabin air filters Electrical or sensor issues Cooling fans not operating properly Sometimes it’s a simple fix… and sometimes it takes proper testing to get to the root of it. What You Can Do Right Now Before assuming the worst, here are a few quick things you can check: βœ” Is your airflow weak? (could be a cabin air filter) βœ” Does it take a long time to cool down? βœ” Is it colder while driving vs. sitting still? βœ” Any unusual noises when the A/C is on? These little clues can tell us a lot about what’s going on. Why Modern A/C Needs a Proper Inspection Today’s vehicles rely on sensors, pressures, and precise refrigerant levels to cool properly. That’s why we don’t guess, we test. At Ortega Car Care, we use proper diagnostics and digital inspections so you can actually see what’s going on with your A/C system, not just hear about it. No guesswork, no unnecessary services, just clear answers provided with our Digital Vehicle Inspections. Stay Cool This Summer A properly working A/C system isn’t just about comfort; it’s about safety, visibility, and enjoying the drive (especially in Florida heat). If your A/C isn’t keeping up now, it’s only going to struggle more as temperatures climb. Need Your A/C Checked?
